THE EMBATTLED Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is expected to present new proposals to EU leaders tonight at an emergency summit in Brussels.
Prior to the gathering of leaders, the so-called Eurogroup of finance ministers will discuss the situation, but hopes of a quick breakthrough remain slim.
However, last night, French and German leaders told Athens that the door was still open for debt negotiations with troika of creditors.
"We say very clearly that the door for talks remains open and tomorrow’s meeting of euro zone leaders should be understood in this sense,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel said.
Earlier, the president of the European commission, Jean-Claude Juncker said a solution would not appear overnight.
"What we are going to do today is to talk to each other and restore order,” he said.
Meanwhile, Cyprus House Speaker Yiannakis Omirou said that the Greek people overwhelmingly rejected EU`s austerity policies that have led to recession, unemployment, social suffering and a gap between "the rich North and the poor South.”
Omirou said that Brussels should hear the message of the Greek people and change direction through investment policies, development, job creation and social cohesion.
President Nicos Anastasiades and Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras discussed the latest developments regarding the Greek debt crisis on Monday night, prior to their face-to-face meeting in Brussels this evening.
The two leaders spoke by phone "to coordinate action in view of the Eurozone summit,” Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides said.
Greek banks will stay shut on Tuesday and Wednesday, and it remains unclear when they will re-open.
