Storm Batters Cyprus With Rain, Sleet And Snow , Set To Clear On Thursday

STRONG WINDS are lashing parts of the island as one of the worst storms so far this year tightens its grip, with snowfall causing problems on roads in the mountains.

Authorities are now on 'yellow alert' because of the bad weather.

Coastal areas have taken the brunt of the battering from high winds, which reached eight on the Beaufort scale and are set to continue through Tuesday night into Wednesday.

In some areas trees were uprooted and power supplies affected, with police warning the public to take care when driving in the extremely gusty winds, which are especially strong on the eastern coasts.

The Head of Road Safety Group and Chairman of REACTION Marios Stavrou said that driving in high winds is extremely dangerous for road users including pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and car drivers.

Temperatures have also dropped below the seasonal average, with highs of 12 °C in Nicosia and 14 °C in coastal areas.

In Paphos, high winds and rain caused some traffic problems. High waves were reported along the coast and in the harbour, with heavy rain - especially on higher ground.

Heavy rains and strong winds are also reported on the Limassol-Paphos highway, which runs close to the coast.

Snowfall on the mountains has made driving difficult, with some roads only open to vehicles with chains or four-wheel drives.

Motorists heading to Troodos have been told to be wary tonight of icy conditions caused by the combination of heavy rain, snow and fall in temperature.

The weather is expected to clear as of Thursday evening.
