Students of EMU Interior Architecture Department Gain Success in ‘National Furniture Design Competition'




Eastern Mediterranean University Architecture Faculty, Interior Architecture Department students participated in the 8th National Furniture Design Competition with their furniture design projects produced within the framework of the “Furniture and Fixtures” course. Out of 956 applications submitted within the framework of the competition, designs of 7 students of EMU qualified for the second stage.

The 8th National Furniture Design Competition aims to contribute to the development of the vision for the future in the field of home furnishings, furniture industry in Turkey representing the product and the identity of the design quality as well as to bring together the industry and talented interior architects. First project submissions for the competition took place on 22 December 2014.

The competition invites current and prospective designers to design flexible, eco friendly and transportation efficient furniture units and systems through benefitting from the possibilities provided by new materials and by considering the structure of the furniture sector.

In line with the aims of the competition, during the current academic year, EMU Interior Architecture Department organised the Furniture and Fixtures Courses (ITAS 403 and INAR 403) delivered by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kağan Günçe and Res. Assist. Gizem Çobanoğlu in a way allowing the students to participate in the aforesaid competition. A total of 33 EMU Interior Architecture student participated in the competition in house, office, kitchen-bathroom and smart furniture categories.

Chaired by Prof. Önder Küçükerman, the competition jury is formed by  Reşit Soley, Aziz Sarıyer, Jan Nahum, Mustafa Toner, Kaan Dericioğlu, Didem Çapa, Fatih Kıral, Murat Armağan and Renan Gökyay.

The award ceremony of the 8th National Furniture Design Competition will take place at İstanbul Lazzoni Hotel on 10 April 2015. It is worth mentioning that a student from EMU Interior Architecture Department qualified for the award in “Smart Furniture” category among 1.153 applications in 2014.
